Our Etiquette

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a practice built on trust, respect, and shared responsibility.

At Storm Sail BJJ, etiquette exists to protect learning, safety, and community.

Storm Sail BJJ is a place to train with purpose.

Respect for the art, the space, and each other allows everyone to learn, adapt, and progress over time.

These standards apply to everyone, regardless of belt, age, or experience.

  • BRING YOUR WATER BOTTLE

  • Train with care for your partner

  • Control intensity before seeking dominance

  • Tap early, release immediately

  • Leave ego at the door

  • Contribute to the room, not just yourself

1. Respect the Space

  • Arrive on time and prepared.

  • Bow or acknowledge the mat before stepping on.

  • Keep the training area clean and organized.

  • Shoes stay off the mat at all times.

The mat is a shared space. Treat it accordingly.

2. Hygiene Is Non-Negotiable

  • Clean Gi / Rashguard for every session.

  • Trimmed nails, no jewelry.

  • Good personal hygiene at all times.

  • Avoid exposed wounds whenever possible

This is about respect and safety, not appearance.

3. Listen, Then Train

  • Pay attention during instruction.

  • Ask questions at the appropriate time.

  • Drill with intention, not distraction.

Learning requires presence.

4. Take Care of Your Training Partners

  • Match intensity appropriately.

  • Tap early, release immediately.

  • No reckless or uncontrolled techniques.

Your partner’s safety is your responsibility.

5. Ego Stays Off the Mat

  • Wins and losses are part of training.

  • There is no need to prove anything.

  • Focus on learning, not comparison.

Progress comes from humility.

6. Respect Rank and Experience

  • Acknowledge instructors and senior students.

  • Line up and follow class structure.

  • Higher belts are expected to lead by example.

Rank reflects responsibility, not status.

7. Train With Consistency and Care

  • Communicate injuries or limitations.

  • Take rest when needed.

  • Support others doing the same.

Longevity matters.

8. Community First

  • Be welcoming to new students.

  • Help others learn and feel included.

  • Treat everyone with respect, on and off the mat.

We grow together.
